Snohetta Bird's Nest

Client: Snohetta (link)
Type: Model, Product
Material: Birch Plywood, Acrylic
Technique: Laser cutting, Assembly, Finishing Work

Prototope was asked by Snohetta to laser cut and finish the pieces for a bird's nest they were donating to the Design Trust for Public Space's 2009 Annual Benefit auction. The nest was designed to slide into a standard CMU block to provide a habitat for small birds that could be viewed through a one-way glass panel. The nest was made up of scores of laser cut birch plywood and acrylic sections. All the pieces of the nest were hand-finished to remove any discoloration caused by cutting the dense plywood. The large rear blocks of the nest were assembled by Prototope, while the exterior sections were assembled by Snohetta.
