Prototype for Mary Miss Studio

Client: Mary Miss Studio (link)
Type: Artwork
Material: : Acrylic Mirror, Rowmark Synthetic Metal, Paper
Technique: Laser cutting, Laser engraving, Assembly

Mary Miss asked Prototope to produce a prototype of an outdoor mirror for a project she is working on. The mirrors are to be positioned at various outdoor sites. Viewers looking into the mirror would see a location reflected that would align with a marker on the mirror's surface. The engraved text and marker would provide information about the surrounding environment that wouldn't typically be apparent. In this prototype, the marker would indicate historic flood levels, and show where these levels would be on an object in the environment behind the viewer.

The prototype was made from a laser-engraved acrylic mirror, with a synthetic metal rim and back. While the actual piece is to be made from a metal such as stainless steel, we used a synthetic metal which allowed us to produce the piece quickly for the purposes of the mockup.
