Baltimore Neighborhoods Puzzle
Client: Ingrid Burrington (link)
Type: Product
Material: Rowmark Plastic
Technique: Laser cutting, Laser engraving
Artist Ingrid Burrington asked Prototope to laser cut the pieces for her project on the city of Baltimore. Burrington wanted to create a puzzle where the pieces were made up of the more than 200 neighborhoods in Baltimore. She used GIS data to generate the various shapes, which were then labeled with the name of each neighborhood. She wanted to create a more durable version of a previous iteration of the puzzle, so we decided to go with a synthetic wood that could also be engraved -- this would allow the pieces to be fairly rugged, but also extremely detailed in terms of both cut and legibility of the text for even the smallest neighborhoods.
